Abstract/Summary

A desk-based assessment of the proposed swimming pool and leisure centre site, Wellingborough has shown the area to lie within the medieval core of the town. Historic maps and documents depict a High Street frontage probably built up since the medieval period. To the rear lay open land which has been progressively in-filled from the 19th century until widespread clearance took place following a planning appraisal in 1964. The site includes Listed Buildings. Much of the formerly open land to the rear of High Street is today a surface car park. The site includes areas of waste scrubland and wide mown grass verges.
