Abstract/Summary
Three trial pits were hand-dug on the site of a proposed garage within the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Ashton Manor Moated Site, South Northamptonshire. The pits were 1200-1500mm deep, but only one reached the natural geology. The lower layers comprised clays with limestone to a thickness of 800mm. In one trench these layers dipped towards the north, and this may relate to the nearby presence of the moat. Finds were sparse but there was some medieval and residual Roman pottery. The upper layers contained building material, pottery and other finds of C16th-C18th date. The topsoil contained C18th - C20th pottery.
