Abstract/Summary
Excavations in adbance of gravel extraction on land to the south of Hardwater Road Wollaston produced evidence for an extensive landscape of Iron Age and Roman farms was arranged along a single routeway. The farms were all of low status. A single Anglo Saxon feature was excavated at the southern end of the quarry but otherwise finds of this period were limited to two scatters of pottery and a fragment of small long brooch recovered by metal detection. On excavation, the feature revealed a warrior burial equipped with helmet and sword. It lay alongside the routeway suggesting the ealier land units were still in existence. The burial contained artefacts indicative of high status including only the fourth Anglo-Saxon helment recovered from England.
