Abstract/Summary

Excavation of a house plot at Corby Road, Stanion located a cluster of waster pits within a potter's tenement. A total of 600kg of pottery was recovered, representing over 200 vessels many of which have been reconstructed. This assemblage has the potential to add significantly to the understanding of the Lyveden/Stanion pottery industry, which supplied much of medieval Northamptonshire and parts of the surrounding counties with its more utilitarian table ware. Glazed jugs were the major product but bowls are also present, along with smaller quantities of glazed roof ridge tiles and ceramic kiln furniture. It is proposed that an application should be made to English Heritage for a grant to enable this assemblage to be set within a broader review and reassessment of current knowledge of the Stanion pottery industry. This would include a review of the kiln products and a study of the arrangement of the poter's tenements at the northern end of the present village. The latter study will enhance the Sites and Monuments record and can act as a tool to assist future management of the archaeological resource.
