Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire Archaeology carried out a desk-based assessment on 114 ha of land at Ellands Farm to the west of the village of Hemington, in relation to a proposal to construct a windfarm on the site. Three prehistoric and Roman archaeological sites, comprising one or more ditched enclosures and other features, identified from aerial photographs, lie within the survey area. Roman pottery has been recovered from the surface of some of these sites. There is also information to suggest that a Roman road ran through, or close to, the survey area. The records indicate that one of the propose wind turbines will impact on an archaeological cropmark site, and there is the potential of at least one of the other turbines affecting other archaeological remains. Further survey will aid the better definition of the archaeological resource and inform a mitigation strategy.
