Abstract/Summary
The development site lies in the core of the medieval town, to the immediate north of the market. The historic map evidence suggests that in the medieval and late medieval period it may have been occupied by several small plots intersected by lanes, perhaps occupied by traders or craftsmen supplying the market. Sometime after the end of the C16th the site appears to have been rearranged and has subsequently comprised two long tenements running between College Street and Saffron Road, with frontages onto College Street and changing patterns of ancillary buildings to the rear. Those within the development area have been demolished. Parts of the rear plots have remained undeveloped, and may preserve evidence of the medieval usage. The former frontage onto College Street has been levelled, with part of the façade retained as a boundary wall.
