Abstract/Summary

Dr Martin Tingle was commissioned to undertake an archaeological desk-based assessment, an evaluation and then a watching brief during development of land at Market Hill, Rothwell, Northamptonshire (centred on NGR SP 817 811) hereafter referred to as 'the Site' (figure 1). Planning permission has been granted by Kettering Borough Council for development on this site subject to a planning condition requiring the applicant to carry out a programme of archaeological works prior to the commencement of development. This programme was conducted in accordance with an approved written scheme of archaeological investigation following the parameters of a Brief issued by Northamptonshire County Council, Historic Environment Team. The aims of this report are to collate the known archaeological and historical resources and to consider the likely impact of the development of the site. This is followed by a report detailing the results of an archaeological evaluation of the site together with the results of a watching brief carried out during the excavation of the foundation trenches and the re-routing of sewerage on the site. The research for this report was designed to comply with standards established by the IFA (Institute for Field Archaeologists).
