Abstract/Summary

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by John Mowlem PLC to design a methodology, prepare a written scheme of investigation and undertake archaeological monitoring works (a watching brief) during the rehabilitation of Gladstone Sidings, Northampton. Previously a desk-based assessment had identified the potential for archaeological deposits and structures, dating to the Romano-British period, to be present on Site, through caveated that judgement by reiterating that the site had been heavily developed in the past, both as an iron stone quarry, clay pits for brick making and in the 1920s and 1930s as railway sidings. The watching brief was undertaken on an area(s) of the site on which ground work associated with the construction of new rail facilities would affect previously unworked ground, on the 17th May 2005.
