Abstract/Summary

This study considers the historical development and archaeological potential of a piece of land now forming part of Quinton House School, which occupies the former medieval manor house and country house known as Upton Hall, and is associated with the remains of the deserted Medieval village of Upton; the open field system which served the village; the formal gardens and landscape park associated with the later house. It has been prepared in support of planning and Listed Building applications, submitted on behalf of the school, in order to demolish the existing porch and add a lightweight glazed structure over the courtyard on the north side of the Grade I Listed senior School to create a new dining hall; to demolish a small part of the existing building used as a junior school, add a light weight glazed structure over the existing courtyard and adapt the original covered access in order to provide a new multi-purpose hall with an office and reception area; re-locate within the walled garden area one of the Grade I Listed Arbours; construct a new sports hall and classroom building at the south east corner of the sports field contained within the former walled garden; create a new access road and car parking within the walled garden; and reposition the existing rugby pitch within the walled garden. The assessment reviews both the evidence for archaeological remains in the vicinity and the historical development of the existing buildings and landscape, describing those structures which might be affected by the proposals. It discusses the likely implications of the proposals and concludes that they will have a minimal effect of the Listed Buildings and other structures on the site, and are therefore acceptable. It proposes that some archaeological evaluation, probably in the form of geophysical survey and two trial trenches, is desirable prior to the commencement of construction of the sports hall and the classroom building and the access road designed to serve it.
