Abstract/Summary

The National Trust are preparing a major dredging project at Lyveden New Bield Scheduled Ancient Monument commencing 18th September 2002 for 10-14 days to include a permanent archaeological presence by Brian Dix. The environmental potential of the deeper silts has been evaluated by cores taken by Dr Chris Hunt of Huddersfield University, to inform the methodology used on site. The water features will be halved by a water filled dam and subsequently drained for desilting works, silts to be spread and examined periodically. Waterlogged timbers may be recovered from the drained features, while the second phase will see archaeological investigation of the north west causeway. Post-dredging the spread silts will be 'fieldwalked' and subjected to metal detecting to recover smaller artefacts.
