Abstract/Summary

Dr Martin Tingle was commissioned by Mr Stuart Bates of Sundial Homes to undertake an archaeological desk-based assessment followed by trial trenching on a site at School Lane, Braybrooke, Northants, following an application to Kettering Borough Council, seeking planning permission to construct three terraced houses with associated garages. Despite there being clear evidence of the presence of a building on the site from maps of the 18th to the 20th centuries, no trace of this structure could be located beyong the presence of substantial dressed blocks of ironstone along the street frontage which had been used at a later date as the foundation of a brick wall. It is unlikely that a substantial stone building would disappear without any trace and it is possible that the dressed stone is unrelated to the building shown on the maps. This could have been a barn and may not therefore have been constructed without substantial foundations. However the results from this evaluation tend to confirm the results from previous work in Green Lane and at Firs Farm which do not point to substantial medieval settlement in this part of Braybrooke.
