Abstract/Summary

This document presents the results of an archaeological desk-based assessment of a proposed quarry extension to the Collyweston Quarry, Duddington, Northamptonshire. The study comprises an assessment of all available cultural heritage information and considers the potential for the survival of previously unrecorded archaeological; remains within the development area. No scheduled monuments, registered historic parks and gardens or registered battlefields would be affected by the proposed development. No archaeological sites orf regional or national importance have been identified within the area of the quarry extension, although the site of a post-medieval building, known as Gregory’s Lodge, and a small post-medieval quarry have been identified lying within that area. However, the discovery of a Bronze Age barrow and of Iron Age and later features associated with iron smelting in adjacent areas immediately to the west suggest that the quarry extension area has a moderate to high potential to contain previously unrecorded archaeological remains of prehistoric, Roman and early medieval date. The proposed development is unlikely to affect the setting or character of Duddington Village Conservation Area or any Listed Buildings within it. However, two hedgerows in the southern part of the extension area could be classed as ‘important’ under the Hedgerow Regulations.
