Abstract/Summary

During June 2003 Hertfordshire Archaeological Trust (HAT) carried out a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording at land adjoining 9 Sulehay Road, Yarwell, Northamptonshire. Provision had also been made for the excavation of any archaeological features present on the site. Widespread Romano-British activity is known from this part of the Nene valley, and a villa complex was partially excavated by Oundle School close by to the north of the site. Archaeological monitoring during topsoil stripping within the footprint of a large agricultural building revealed no archaeological features at the surface of the subsoil. Deposits were not characterised below the subsoil. The proposed new building is to be constructed on a raft foundation, extending no deeper than the surface of the subsoil. Any archaeological remains below this level, if present, will be preserved in situ.
