Abstract/Summary

Halcrow Group Ltd were commissioned by English partnerships and Northampton Borough Council to carry out a Stage 1 Feasibility Study and Framework Plan for a site at Ransome Road in Northampton. The site is located on the southeastern side of the city, adjacent to the River Nene. Only the southern part of the site was investigated for the purposes of this report. The site is proposed to be developed into managed housing and a garden store. Known current and past land uses within and surrounding the site that could have a geo-environmental significance to the redevelopment include a haulage depot, a power station from prior to 1958 to 1983, a foundry, a scrap metal yard, and the railway line with associated engine shed and sidings. The investigation consisted of four cable-percussive boreholes within the former landfill to a maximum depth of 0.7m and nineteen trial pits within the railway sidings and parkland areas. Installation of two further boreholes and one window sample borehole was carried out to improve groundwater data for the site. The results of ground investigation confirmed the ground conditions at the site to consist of made ground, landfill, alluvium, River Terrace Deposits and Lias Clay. Results of chemical testing indicated the presence of elevated levels of potentially hazardous substances (including heavy metals, hydrocarbons, ammonia, manganese and ground gases/vapours) within the made ground and landfill deposits across the site, as well as in the groundwater.
