Abstract/Summary

A desk-based assessment carried out by Northamptonshire Archaeology for Anglian Water Ltd in advance of a proposed sewage scheme at Cotterstock and Tansor, Northamptonshire has shown that there is considerable evidence for prehistoric and Roman remains in the locality, of which ten known sites lie below the pipeline route. One field within Cotterstock contains well preserved medieval/post-medieval open field earthworks, and another field has crop mark remains of former furrows. Two land plots, one within each village, also contains earthworks of an uncertain nature. Historic maps have shown the post-medieval development of the villages and the gradual enclosure of fields. Further evaluation comprising fieldwalking and geophysical survey will seek to characterise and date the crop mark site once localised flooding has subsided and standing crops are removed.
