Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation comprising six trial trenches was undertaken on land south of Main Road, Hackleton. A DBA had indicated a high potential for archaeological remains. The evaluation revealed ditches containing medieval pottery in association with pits from which small quantities of pottery, animal bone and evidence of domestic or agricultural processing waste was recovered. It is possible that during the medieval period the site fell within an area of paddocks, closes and enclosures at the periphery of the main area of habitation. Post-medieval activity at the site was indicated by a ditch parallel to Main Road and a probable farm track leading off it. Evidence of iron smithing in the viciinity was salso reveleasd. Finds retrieved included medieval and post medieval pottery, fired clay, animal bone and a worked flint.
