Title | Archaeological Building Assessment of the Old Smithy, Apethorpe, Northamptonshire |
Author/Originator | Prentice, J. |
Date/Year | 2011 |
Abstract/Summary
A building assessment recorded the remains of a small stone and brick building which appeared to be of mid-late nineteenth century date. The building has been substantially altered and partly demolished, as well as being re-roofed relatively recently. Oral evidence suggests that the building served as a smithy/ forge during the 1930s when it was also used by a wheelwright. Almost no evidence of this phase now remains within the building and it is not thought that it was built to function as such, but was simply a barn associated with the nearby Manor Farm.
