Abstract/Summary
In August 2002, Cotswold Archaeology was commissioned to carry out an Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment of land at Princess Marina Hospital, Northampton. The report addresses both the below-ground archaeological resource and standing buildings (the built heritage). No World Heritage Sites or sites included on the Tentative List of future nominations for World Heritage sites are situated within the Site or its immediate vicinity. No Scheduled Ancient Monuments, Areas of Archaeological Importance or Listed Buildings are situated within the site. Four SMR entries are situated within the site. These comprise Hospital Farm and associated buildings, the findspot of a Neolithic hand axe and the findspot of a scatter of prehistoric worked flints. Several phases of archaeological investigation have taken place within the vicinity of the Site, although not within the site itself, identifying distinct areas of prehistoric and historic occupation in the area. Prehistoric and Romano-British settlement has been identified immediately to the south of the Site, although further work to the north of Weedon Road has found little further evidence. Anglo-Saxon and medieval settlement around the village of Upton are both recorded to the west of the ite. There may be potential for the extension of prehistoric and historic remains into the Site, although landscaping associated with the construction of Princess Marina Hospital between 1964-1972 may have disturbed any currently unrecorded deposits to some extent.
