Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire Archaeology conducted an archaeological desk-based assessment in advance of a new access road to the west of the A6003 through Rockingham and linking The Cottons to buildings fronting Main Street. The site lies at the historic core of the village. Previous archaeological works at The Cottons have encountered Late Bronze Age remains, in addition to former medieval and post medieval tenements and a medieval close. A building was depicted in 1615 in the proximity of the access road, this also indicated that the new access road lies roughly along the route of a former back lane, which no longer survives. Estate maps from 1806 and 1815 clearly depict a range of buildings, which replaced the former back lane, directly within the footprint of the new access road. A pond and field boundary that date from 1806-1815 will probably be encountered where the access road passes between fields. The potential of the site for archaeological remains is considered moderate to high.
