Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire Archaeology conducted an archaeological desk-based assessment of land at 16a London Road, Northamptonshire. There are very few recorded prehistoric or Roman sites and finds in the vicinity and the plot of land lies beyond the medieval core of the village. Map evidence suggests that the site lay within Roade's open field system, until Inclosure in the early 19th century in a field known as Great Church Croft. At some time between 1819 and 1889 the Fox and Hounds pub was built on the corner of London Road and Croft Lane. The eastern part of the site appears to lie within the former back yard area of the pub and there may be below-ground archaeological remains associated with that period. The western part of the site appears never to have been developed.
