Abstract/Summary

An auger survey and trial trenching were carried out to try to determine the character and date of a series of pre-coppice earthworks comprising ditched and banked enclosures. An auger survey was initially carries out in transects across three ditch and bank earthworks to identify which of the landscape features had the best potential for further examination. One location was subsequently selected for excavation. The excavation clarified the presence of an early bank on a scarp, with a later ditch cur and further bank make-up, although the dates of the features were not determined. A small amount of charcoal recovered from the deposit at the base of the bank was radiocarbon dated to the early Iron Age.
