Abstract/Summary

Historic evidence suggests that the site was near to St. Leonard's Hospital and chapel, later St. leonard's farm. Map and historic evidence suggests that much of the eastern part of the assessment area was water meadow or open field whilst the western part had buildings. These buildings may have formed part of the settlement at Cotton End from the medieval period. By the late 19th century the railways had impacted on the surrounding area with other industries and housing being constructed. There are 3 HER sites that lie within the development area, comprising a level crossing, a crossing keeper's cottage and an area of post medieval occupation. The assessment area was developed by the 1960s with housing and industrial units including a co-operative dairy.
