Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire Archaeology, commissioned by Halcrow Group Ltd, conducted geophysical prospection as part of the archaeological evaluation of the proposed Cross Valley Link Road, Upton. A combined area of c.9ha was surveyed by gradiometer. A probably prehistoric pit alignment was detected in the north of the survey area. Former medieval ridge-and-furrow field cultivation, in two different orientations, has been located across the entire survey area. A cropmark previously identified as a medieval headland has been detected and re-evaluation as a feature from a different period as ploughing runs either above or below. Other archaeological features, mainly ditches were identified in the north and south of the area. The centre of the survey area was encompassed by anomalies of a likely natural origin.
