Abstract/Summary

English Partnerships was granted planning permission to develop a 43.9ha block of land at Upton, in the Northampton South West District, for residential purposes (NGR SP 722 600). For the purposes of discharging the archaeological condition attached to the consent, Northamptonshire Archaeology carried out a programme of archaeological works centred on extensive open area excavation of Iron Age and Roman settlements in Zone A. Further evaluation in the form of a geophysical survey and trial trenching was carried out in Zones B and C, where only the remains of the medieval field system were found. With the completion of all fieldwork, the present document has been prepared to provide a restatement of the broad results, but without repeating the detail contained in previous reports. An updated project design will be submitted to the archaeological planning officer for approval and it will also be submitted to English Partnerships together with a restatement of the funding commitment towards the post-excavation and reporting as agreed with English Partnerships in 2000.
