Abstract/Summary
A desk-based assessment was carried out for Landmark Planning Ltd in order to determine the archaeological potential of land off Station Road in Long Buckby, Northamptonshire in advance of the submission of a planning application for a proposed housing development. Data was gathered from a range of primary and secondary sources including a search of the Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record, Northamptonshire Records Office, and the National Monuments Record. Prehistoric activity in this area is limited to the discovery of a scatter of flint flakes 300m south of the proposed development site. There is limited evidence of activity during the Roman period, where pottery has been recovered from a single location near Long Buckby Castle, c.500m to the north of the proposed development area. Long Buckby appears to have emerged in the Anglo-Saxon period, and following the Norman Conquest of 1066 a castle was built in the same area, the Long Buckby Ringwork. This is located c.500m to the north of the site. The later medieval core of Long Buckby surrounds a market place which was laid out in the 13th century. At the time, the proposed development area was probably open fields. Long Buckby has many listed buildings, mainly dating to the 18th and 19th centuries, attesting to its growth due to first the woollen, and later the shoe industry. There is no record of any archaeological sites or artefacts from the proposed development area itself. Overall, the site has a low archaeological potential of local significance.
