Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire Archaeology carried out a desk-based assessment on land occupied by the Cliftonville Middle School, now proposed for redevelopment. The study found that no archaeological remains are known from within the development area. Saxon and Medieval burials, however, have been recorded some 300m beyond the proposed development inside the grounds of St. Andrews Hospital and the Northampton General Hospital respectively. Sources consulted show that open fields occupied the site until the early 20th century when the site was converted to allotment gardens. The allotments then gave way to the Cliftonville Middle School which was built up in the mid 1960s.
