Abstract/Summary
Northamptonshire Archaeology conducted a desk-based assessment on land at Wellingborough Road, Northampton in advance of proposed development. No archaeological finds or features have been recorded on the site. A number of Roman finds have been made around the area and include an early Roman pottery kiln to the north of the site as well as coins and pottery found throughout the Parish. The evidence points to Roman settlement, common in the Nene Valley as a whole, and possibly relating to small farms in this instance. The site was part of a field known as Cherry Orchard, suggesting former land use. It is possible that the orchard was once part of the gardens connected to one of the manors in Weston Favell, that belonging latterly to the Ekins but demolished in around 1798. Map evidence dating back to the late eighteenth century reveals that the eastern part of the site was not built on until the 1930s while the western part of the site latterly belonged to the Trumpet Inn and has remained undeveloped.
