Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire Archaeology conducted a desk-based assessment on land off High Street and Bowen Square, Daventry in advance of proposed mixed-use development. Searches were undertaken of the relevant local depositories including Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record and Northamptonshire Record Office to gain information about the known or potential archaeological resource within the site. The site has not been classified as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, nor is it included on the Register of Parks and Gardens or Battlefields. Although not a listed building, 17 High Street does possess a degree of architectural and historical merit, principally because it was briefly the residence of an authoress in the early 19th century. The site frontage does lie within Daventry Conservation Area, and any demolition of buildings will require conservation area consent. A number of archaeological sites have been recorded in the vicinity of the development site that may have some relevance regarding any potential archaeology on site. These primarily relate to the location of a bakehouse and malt mill that appear to have originated in the medieval period and existed until the early 19th century. Prior to this land appears to have been agricultural land.
