Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire Archaeology was commissioned to carry out magnetometer survey on 332hectares of land at east Kettering. A 50% sampling strategy was followed, expanded around cropmarks, resulting in a total of 177 hectares of survey. Although parts of the land contained little other than truncated ridge and furrow of medieval field systems, several foci of likely prehistoric and Romano-British settlement were located. These comprised a mixture of scattered individual settlements in the north and north-west of the survey area, and a particular concentration of settlement in the south-east, around Grange Farm. Here, at least five distinct foci of settlement were located within an area of 100ha. Some elements of settlement are also associated with linear land boundaries extending for in excess of 0.5km. Intersecting ditch systems show that more than a single period of activity is represented.
