Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire Archaeology carried out building recording and analysis on the former Fishmarket and 5 & 7 Sheep Street, Northampton. The Fishmarket was constructed in 1938-9 and remained in use as a food market until 2006 when it was converted to an art gallery. It finally closed in 2012, and is awaiting demolition. Buildings 5&7 Sheep Street have theur origins in the 18th century, and have since undergone multiple alterations and internal rearrangements. Few elements of their original build remain. All were derelict at the time of the survey. In addition to this work, a test pit was excavated on land to the north of Yard Lane to locate any archaeological features or deposits which may be present in the area. The test pit revealed the remains of post medieval buildings and a possible post medieval quarry pit but it was not possible to establish whether any earlier deposits had survived.
