Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to future groundwork associated with the proposal for residential development of the site. The excavation of 24 2mx30m trenches was necessary subsequent to a geophysical survey which identified anomalies, most notable a square feature measuring c.60m across, identified as a possible ditched enclosure. Five of the trenches revealed remains of the square enclosure. Material remains from the ditch fills indicate Roman occupation but an earlier construction date cannot be discounted. Re-cuts observed in trenches 13 and 23 might indicate two distinct occupation phases, but the function of the enclosure is as yet unknown. Tentative evidence for Saxon activity at the site was also recovered, although the nature of this was uncertain.
