Abstract/Summary
In September 2012 historic building recording and a heritage impact assessment were undertaken of The Glebe House Barn, Marston St Lawrence, Northamptonshire. The late 17th century barn was built as part of a complex of farm buildings for what was then the vicarage. The barn is rubble built with a corrugated metal roof. An early 20th century stable block abuts the northern elevation of the barn and a steelframed barn has been added to the rear. The interior of the barn has seen considerable alterations: secondary, brick built walls were constructed along the east and west elevations, possibly in the 18th century, a window was inserted into the south wall in the 20th century as was a corn drying system in the southern end of the building. The furnace and ventilation passages are set 0.90m into the concrete base of the system, which provided for three corn dryers. A door has been inserted into the north wall of the barn and a window in the same wall has been blocked up. The stable block replaces an earlier slightly wider and considerably shorter building that is shown on early mapping and survives as a roof scar on the northern gable end of the barn. The barn is a significant local building in grave need of attention. The proposed development addresses the requirements of the building with a high degree of sensitivity to the architectural and structural heritage of the complex. The potential for the survival of below ground heritage assets within the barn has been compromised by the construction of the corn dryer. Nonetheless, the fact that the site lies within the medieval core of the village suggests that there is a low-medium possibility that medieval and post-medieval features may have survived elsewhere on the site.
