Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire Archaeology conducted an archaeological desk-based heritage assessment of land at Rockingham Dene, Kettering, Northamptonshire. There are no designated assets within the site boundary or in the wider vicinity. There have been scattered finds of unstratified prehistoric worked flint and pottery in the vicinity. Kettering Roman town lies some distance to the east and its associated cemetery is located about 350m to the east. However, no Roman finds have been made close to the site and the boundaries of the settlement are considered to lie some way to the east. The site lay within the open fields of Kettering during the medieval and post-medieval periods and was only developed in the late 19th century, when a villa-type house was constructed. This was later demolished and replaced by a number of smaller buildings which have also since been taken down. It is considered that the eastern half of the site will have suffered from extensive disturbance due to the two phases of construction and though the western half is less disturbed the potential for archaeological remains is low.
