Abstract/Summary
Northamptonshire Archaeology conducted an archaeological desk-based heritage assessment of land at the former Beanfield Comprehensive School, Corby, Northamptonshire. There are no designated assets within the site boundary or in the wider vicinity. Extensive evidence of Roman settlement was identified during the development of the area some 300m south of the former school. Recent archaeological investigation immediately to the south of the site found evidence of a single Roman ditch, perhaps suggesting that it was situated some distance from settlement. The site was situated within Rockingham Forest during the medieval period and was part of a wood known as Cottingham Bare until the 19th century. It was situated on the edge of a large clearing known as Beanfield Lawn. By the mid-I 9th century much of the site was either pasture or arable. The former school buildings will have damaged or destroyed any archaeological remains in the north-eastern part of the site. The archaeological investigation and Ordnance Survey maps also suggest that much of the site may have been terraced. This may also have damaged or destroyed any archaeological remains.
