Abstract/Summary
An archaeological evaluation comprising five trial trenches was undertaken on land at Grove Street, Raunds as the area was archaeologically sensitive, lying immediately north of an area of Iron Age and early medieval settlement at Thorpe End. The Thorpe End site is a Scheduled Monument (11508). A Roman settlement is also situated a short way to the west. The only feature recorded during the evaluation was a limestone wall foundation of probable 18th or 19th century originins in trench 5 which was positioned close to the frontage of Grove Street. The building represented by this wall was in use into recent times as evidenced by concrete render and a modern brick lining added to it. The building was probably demolished during the construction of the Smith's container factory in the late nineteen eighties. Over the remaining area of the site it appears that disturbance due to 18th and 19th century quarrying and the construction of the Smiths factory has destroyed any features or deposits of archaeological interest.
