Abstract/Summary
An archaeological trenching evaluation was undertaken following a pre-application planning enquiry for residential development at 15 Chancery Lane, Thrapston, Northamptonshire. The site is archaeologically sensitive, lying within the historic core of Thrapston and close to known remains of medieval and possibly Saxon date. There is also limited evidence for Roman activity in the vicinity. The evaluation revealed four ditches, two of them being probable property boundaries of medieval tenements off Chancery Lane. Pottery from the ditches is relatively fresh and indicative of medieval and early post medieval domestic activity in the vicinity. The features were overlain by a thick layer of probably post medieval agricultural soil and a thick garden soil. Artefacts retrieved comprised an Anglo-Scandinavian whetstone, medieval and early post medieval pottery, animal bone, including horse and deer antler, burnt stone and oyster shell.
