Abstract/Summary

Archaeological investigations were undertaken during groundworks at 5 Pittams Lane, Wappenham. The investigations monitored initial ground stripping in advance of the construction of four new detached dwellings and associated garages. The site lies close to the medieval core of the village which is best represented by the 13th-14th century church of St. Mary. A possible moated manorial centre has been identified from aerial photos to the north of the site. Roman remains, including settlement and a kiln site, are known to the south of the village. The investigations revealed a sequence of natural, undated and post medieval deposits. Undated features include three ditches which are broadly parallel to existing boundaries and are possibly of post medieval origin. A cobble and a brick surface perhaps relate to former structures at the site. Post medieval brick and tile were the only artefacts retrieved during the investigation.
