SNN109648 - Nunn Mills Locomotive Shed, Northampton: Historic Building Recording

In January 2013 Cotswold Archaeology (CA) was commissioned by Pegasus Planning on behalf of Taylor Wimpey, Persimmon Homes and Avon Cosmetics Ltd. to carry out a historic building recording and assessment of significance of the Locomotive Shed, and associated office building, at Nunn Mills, Northampton (centered on NGR SP 76069 59596). This report has been compiled prior to the submission of planning and listed building consent applications for the development of the site. The Locomotive Shed is a Grade II listed, single storey engine shed built for the Midland Railway in 1873. The office building is located to the north west of the main structure, and though not individually listed it is included within the curtilage listing of the Locomotive Shed. Both buildings are constructed of red brick and feature polychrome brickwork with white and blue bricks used to highlight architectural features such as window openings, quoins and string courses. The Locomotive Shed retains a number of further high specification architectural details such as decorative iron window frames and customized cast-iron structural supports. The Locomotive Shed and the office are both fine and little altered examples of Victorian railway architecture and have high aesthetic value. They are of illustrative value, demonstrating the historical use of locomotive sheds and other ancillary buildings within 19th century railway industry, and of evidential value, as a representation of the operation of the industry in Northampton.
