Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire Archaeology conducted an archaeological desk-based heritage assessment of land at the former Avondale School, Kettering, Northamptonshire. There are no designated assets within the site boundary or in the wider vicinity. The course of a former Roman road may be aligned through the site. It formed one of the major routes through the Roman small town at Kettering, the centre of which was located some way north. A possible kiln has been found about 100m to the north of the site. A Saxon cemetery was located 250m to the south-west of the site and further inhumations have been found in the vicinity, although it is considered that there is probably only a low potential for Saxon activity within the site. During the medieval to the modern period the site lay within the open fields of the parish. The first school on the site opened in 1932, the second in the 1960s. Although much of the site will have suffered extensive disturbance, it is probable that the playing fields have not. There is considered to be a moderate potential for below-ground archaeological features dating to the Roman period, likely to be of local-regional importance at most.
