Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire Archaeology conducted an archaeological desk-based heritage assessment of land at Daventry, Kilsby, Northamptonshire. There are no designated assets within the site boundary although there are a number of Grade II listed buildings and a Grade II* church in the village. The cropmark of a rectilinear enclosure, which may date to the Iron Age or Roman period, has been recorded c 500m to the south-west of the site. Otherwise there is no evidence of activity dating to this period within the search area, although this may be due to a lack of previous archaeological investigation in the vicinity. To the north, a major focus on Iron Age and Roman activity has been found at the Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal. The site lies on the edge of the village of Kilsby, which was in existence as early as the 10th century. Cartographic sources indicate that there has been no development on the site since the early 19th century. However, there are a series of irregular earthworks close to the Daventry Road frontage. It is at present unclear whether these relate to the medieval/post-medieval activity of whether they relate to the construction of the M45 motorway which forms the southern boundary of the site.
