Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire Archaeology was commissioned to carry out archaeological observation, investigation and recording during the groundworks for the construction of a new barn at New Manor Farm, Yarwell, Northamptonshire. A large, flat bottomed rectangular pit, 5m long by 4m wide and 0.6m deep was identified. The fills contained animal bone, including a horse skull, and there was a deposit of burnt debris near the base of the pit. The absence of datable finds leaves its date and function uncertain, but it bears comparison with some small timber buildings of late medieval or early post-medieval date with sunken floors, probably utilised as workshops.
