Abstract/Summary
Northamptonshire Archaeology conducted an archaeological desk-based heritage assessment of land at Woodford Halse, Northamptonshire. There are no designated assets within the site boundary, although several listed buildings are situated close to the site boundary. Several pieces of worked flint have been found to the west of the site, although there is scant other evidence of prehistoric activity in the surrounding area. Similarly, a few sherds of unstratified Roman pottery are the only evidence of Roman activity nearby. Woodford Halse and Hinton were historically distinct settlements; the site lay within the lands of the hamlet Hinton, which was listed separately in Doomsday. Cartographic evidence suggests that the site was underdeveloped until the late 19th century, the proximity to the River Cherwell meaning the fields were all meadow. In the late 19th century a large embankment was built on the site as a sorting siding for the Grand Central Railway. This was closed in 1966 and is now woodland.
