Abstract/Summary

A geophysical (magnetometer) survey covering approximately 13 hectares was carried out on agricultural land to the north of Potterpury, Northamptonshire, in advance of the planning application for a large residential development. The survey has identified anomalies indicative of post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation and 19th century field boundaries. No anomalies of definite archaeological potential have been identified. Several linear trend anomalies of uncertain origin, which may possibly form part of an enclosure/s have been identified in the north western part of the site approximately 200m from the A5 (Watling Street), A circular cropmark previoulsy identifed to the south-east corner of the site has been located. On the basis of the survey the archaeological potential of the site is assessed as moderate to low corroborating the results of an earlier desk-based assessment.
