Abstract/Summary

An archaeological desk-based assessment has been produced by University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) for land adjacent to No.2 The Maltings, Gretton, Northamptonshire (NGR: SP89887 94116). The HER for Northamptonshire has indicated that there are a number of sites in the vicinity of the assessment area, ranging in date from the prehistoric to the post-medieval periods. The proposed development area is located within the core of the medieval village of Gretton, to the south of the site of the church and the medieval manor house. Nos. 2 and 4 The Maltings are grade II listed and were constructed during the 17th century as a single house, replacing an earlier building as shown on the map of 1587. There is therefore good potential for the below-ground presence of medieval and post-medieval archaeological deposits within the development area. Early maps show a building of unknown date which was formerly located on the site in 1837, but demolished by 1964. The visual impact of the new driveway upon the setting of the listed buildings in the vicinity will be minimal.
