Abstract/Summary
An archaeological trial-trench evaluation was carried out on land at The Sorrels, Isham, Northamptonshire (SP 88466 74228) by University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) between 3rd and 5th of December 2014. The work was carried out on behalf of AP Lewis and Sons in advance of the proposed redevelopment of the site. Seven trenches (six approximately 30m long and one approximately 24ml long) were excavated across the site. Three trenches were negative for archaeological activity; Trench 2 at the far west and Trenches 6 and 7 at the far east. In the centre of the site however, on the highest part of the ground Iron Age archaeology was discovered in Trenches 1, 3, 4 and 5. These comprised a number of gullies and pits, as well as a ring gully that could represent a roundhouse. These features could represent an Iron Age settlement within the site. Ridge and furrow associated with medieval and later ploughing was also identified across the site. The site archive will be held by ULAS under the accession number NH_TSI.2014, until it can be deposited with Northamptonshire County Council Museum Services.
