Abstract/Summary

Barnwell Castle was scheduled on the 8th February 1915 and is one of our oldest designation records. Historic England is undertaking a strategic designation project to ensure that the documentation for those sites scheduled following the 1913 Ancient Monuments Consolidation and Amendment Act are up-to-date and reflect current standards. The scheduling needs to be enhanced and modernised to include a full description of the monument. Furthermore the scheduled area needs to be re-assessed in the light of archaeological investigations carried out since 1915 and to provide more accurate large-scale mapping. After examining all the records and other relevant information, and having carefully considered the national importance of the standing and buried remains at Barnwell Castle, the criteria for scheduling continue to be met but the extent of the scheduling should be amended to more accurately reflect the extent of the monument.
