Abstract/Summary
In March 2015, five evaluation trenches were excavated in a garden close to the centre of Wellingbough, in an area which had the potential to reveal evidence of medieval to post-medieval occupation. All of the trenches revealed made-up ground, which was tested up to 2m in four of the trenches, and in one trench, to a depth of 4m. Artefactual, cartographic and structural evidence suggests that the land was raised to its existing level at some time between 1900 and 1915. It is possible that it was the site of a small ironstone quarry, which was excavated in the first decade of the 20th century. There was no evidence of medieval to post-medieval occupation or activity at the site.
