Abstract/Summary

Wardell Armstrong Archaeology were commissioned by Anthony Rickett Architects Ltd to undertake an archaeological desk‐based assessment of an area of land to the rear of The Marston Inn, Marston St Lawrence, Northamptonshire (NGR SP 53652 42612). The assessment was undertaken to inform a proposed planning application for the construction of two dwellings on the site. The desk‐based assessment has identified that the proposed development site lies within an area which has revealed artefactual evidence for prehistoric and Romano‐British activity, although at present there is no clear archaeological evidence for settlement sites. Documentary evidence has indicated that there was a settlement of some form at Marston St Lawrence since at least the 11th century. The HER currently includes the southern end of the proposed development site within the postulated extent of the medieval settlement, although there is as yet no archaeological evidence from within the development site boundary. The earliest indication of buildings or features within the proposed development site boundary is derived from the Enclosure Map of 1760, when a linear range is shown to the rear of what was more latterly The Marston Inn. A building or buildings continued to occupy this area until at least 1955, and the site visit has revealed that part of this historic structure still survives on the site, possibly an ancillary building to The Marston Inn, or utilised for agricultural purposes.
