SNN110263 - Land at Duncote Hall, Duncote, Northamptonshire: Archaeological observation, investigation, recording, analysis and publication

In May 2015 Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried out an archaeological observation, investigation, recording, analysis and publication project on land at Duncote Hall, Duncote, Northamptonshire (NGR SP 6752 5077). The project was commissioned by Pacy & Wheatley Ltd in compliance with a planning condition attached to planning permission for the construction of an extension to Duncote Hall to create 45-bedroom care home. The site lies on the southern side of the village of Duncote, near Towcester. It is located within medieval hamlet of Duncote. It also lies to the east of the Roman road of Watling Street and within area where prehistoric and Romano-British remains have been found. Therefore the site had a potential primarily for medieval and post-medieval archaeological remains. In the event the investigation revealed remains of three walls, possibly the remnants of two separate structures possibly of medieval / post-medieval origin. Comparison with the historic maps suggests that the wall foundations comprise the remains of field boundaries. The 18th century maps demonstrate a number of boundaries that may correlate, while the 1861 map has a large north-west to south-east boundary that may correspond to M1007. The majority of the investigated area was located within a landscaped area where two level terraces had been formed. As a result the majority of the site was subject to truncation of likely 20th century date.
