Abstract/Summary

In February 2015 MOLA Northampton was commissioned by William Ross to carry out archaeological mitigation work on land at Gray’s Close, to the north of Gray’s Lane, Paulerspury, Northamptonshire. The activity was primarily dated to the 12th-mid 13th-centuries, and comprised a series of boundary ditches, pits and postholes of medieval closes extending back from Gray’s Close. This was followed by a short abandonment, before the land use changed to agriculture in the mid-13th century, with a probable cultivation system established over the previous closes. Cultivation continued until the mid-14th century when the land appears to have been turned to pasture. A later and separate ridge and furrow system was in evidence as extant earthworks across the site.
